Anti-Virus Software
Anti-virus (AV) software provides protection against cyberattacks by identifying and blocking malicious software. AV is needed for personal and Penn State systems.
Personal Systems
The Penn State Global Protect VPN performs a check to ensure AV is installed and running. Otherwise, your device is unable to successfully connect. More information is available in KB0013431.
Windows systems running Windows 10 or later should use the built-in Windows Defender.
macOS and Linux don’t have built-in AV installed, but there are several free AV software options available.
- macOS
- Linux
Please contact the IT Service Desk for assistance.
Penn State Systems
All Penn State-owned laptops, workstations and servers must have AV installed and functioning, according to policy AD95. Information Security has selected Microsoft’s Defender for Endpoint as Penn State’s centralized AV solution. Defender for Endpoint is available for any Penn State-owned system running Windows, macOS or Linux.
Please email DefenderATP@psu.edu with any questions about Defender for Endpoint on Penn State-owned systems.
